So theres been a ton of debate regarding the “new” way of schooling kids.

Some examples:

-Many schools have chosen to oust the red pen!!  Red writing, they said, was “stressful.” Many teachers have been advised to grade with colors featuring more “pleasant-feeling tones” so that their instructional messages do not come across as derogatory or demeaning.

-A lot of schools now offer every child a trophy just for playing in a sports game.  They don’t single out the winners…it might hurt the other kids feelings….

-Some schools have taken away the F because it can traumatize a child..

There’s an endless list of ridiculous things I could add….

I am horrified to see how these “new” kids will function in the real world…..

Will they cry when not chosen for a job?  Or stand bewildered when they are fired for doing nothing?  The real world is not easy.  If you get used to failure from a young age it makes you resilient and able to handle the REAL struggles life will bring you later.

I choose to raise my kids the same way I was raised.  When I was little my dad’s infamous catchphrase was “Second place is the first loser”.  I LOOOVE that quote!!  It’s so true!  haha.  We used to play games to the death.  Monopoly games were finished….”You never give up until it’s done.”  We would sit up for days on end to find out who conquered the world in Risk.  Why would you play something if there is no winner?  It defeats the purpose!  Competition is healthy and it will be something you must learn to deal with in every aspect of your life whether you like it or not, whether it offends you or not!

I would never had been a good student in this new way of teaching.   I would have been the kid to just show up.  Why work if there’s no chance of failure?  I was a kid, like most, who got pride out of finishing my work and getting good grades.  The red marks only made me work harder and be more proud of myself when I accomplished a test without them.  You learn what your good at by process of elimination.  “Wow, I suck at that, on to the next thing.”

I’ve read that parents don’t want their children to feel like loser’s.  But what if he is the loser?  He then will be motivated to work his butt off so it doesn’t happen again!  If he walks home with a trophy he will be content in his averageness and not strive for anything.  And the kids who have worked their butts off SHOULD be rewarded…or why work at all.

Just my thoughts:)  Maybe I’m missing a point….  Let me know what you think….

Dear Raimy,

While on the beautiful beach in St Barts, I turned around to find you sharing a towel with a topless beauty.  Upon reaching her perch, I heard you both in conversation.  I had no clue what you were talking about though, because you two were speaking French.  (By the time you read this, I will undoubtedly regret I had you learn a language that I do not know).  The woman was laughing and trying to tell me something, but mama’s an idiot, I couldn’t understand a word she said.  She couldn’t speak a word of English.  She was laughing so hard and thought by speaking slowly I might then understand.  ‘Nope still a moron, hot topless lady’.  I finally was able to pull you away from this woman and we went inside.  “What were you two talking about?” I say nonchalantly, trying not to make you uncomfortable.  You simply say “nothing” and we leave it at that.

The next morning you and Saylor bolt out of bed and straight into your swimsuits.  We sit down for breakfast on the back porch and daddy and I are enjoying the sound of the waves crashing.  Aaaaaaaahhhhh peaceful.  As I sip my hot coffee you look to Saylor and say “Saylor you should only wear your bikini bottoms…that’s what the French do”  “Why Raimy???!!!!” Saylor squeals!  “Because it’s natural and free”.  Jonny and I lock eyes realizing that the topless woman must have told you that…  We do our best not to laugh.  This is a great conversation… “Hey Raim, what do you think of everyone not wearing tops here?” I ask you.  “When you are wearing a tied up swimsuit your boobies are tied down and they hurt.  You shouldn’t wear your top either mommy.  I think it is so beautiful not to.”  “It is beautiful Raimy, I agree”  hahahaha.

Love that we sat over a beautiful breakfast, overlooking the ocean, having a civilized conversation about breasts.

You crack me up beyond belief with your views on the world.  You make the most mundane things in  life sparkle with a new luster.  I pray that we always have such open communication.  You and the girls are my world and I adore you guys with everything in me.

Love,
Mama

I had an amazing birthday with the hubs!  We had a mellow day just the two of us.

When we returned to my moms to pick up the kidlets, we were met with the sweetest surprise.  The kids had worked on cupcakes and had been painting the most precious pottery pieces for us all day.  It was the most special birthday I’ve had yet:)

Mom sent me the prep pics:)

The pics once we arrived are very dark…but you get the gist.  My sweet bears worked so hard and we were so surprised!!
