I have a few collections.  Some I’ve been working on for a while and some new.  There are certain things I just love having around and enjoy looking at….  Thought I’d share.
TRUNKS
I love trunks.  I have one for each of the kids that I use as their time capsules.  At each baby shower, I asked family and friends to write ‘letters to the future’ for each baby.  They each dated the letters with the proper time they should be opened.  Most are on their 18th or 16th birthdays, some say 21 years old and some put on your wedding day.  I asked them to write to them as if they knew them at that age…what they think they will be like, what they will be doing at that point and to write about how they know us, what we are like and what the world will be like in that year.  I have not opened a one and am excited for the days I get to read them as well:)  I also saved magazines and news clippings from the years they were born and personal items that I think will be special.

I love gnomes.  I think they are funny.  I have a few around the house and a few in my balcony garden:) They are strange and creepy and crack me up.  People either love them or hate them.  I get a kick out of the responses…

I have always collected hourglasses.  I have them ALL over my house.  I like having little reminders everywhere of time.  They inspire me to get up and do something with my day and that time is moving whether I am or not.  Although, now with kids in the house, there is a CONSTANT reminder!

My recent collections include old cameras, typewriters and globes.

And of course, my house would not be a home without sailboat and ship pieces everywhere!

I have about one hundred books and magazines on almost every surface of my home, at any given moment!!  I LOOOOVE reading.  About anything really.  A good book can put me in a good mood.  And although I have large stacks in waiting, I can’t help myself from buying more.  I also have started reading a lot of farming books…because I must be prepared for when I ‘one day’ get my farm.

  1. I collect whiskey bottles. in the 1800's my family owned a whiskey distillery which burned down in the beginning of the 1900's. I have several bottles from the distillery and some other items from there as well. I search high and low for them often. Very hard to come by. (also hard to get from the clutches of high priced antiques dealers!)

  2. I collect Mickey Mouse stuff….since we have the same birthday and all. :o)

Here's one I bet no one would think of…..My boss's wife collects vintage mannequin heads….she's got a ton of them mounted on the wall in the back of the store and I guess she has them all over their house.

  3. Hill-They are in the kids room! LOVE!

Marti- Oh my gosh-post a pic. They sound awesome!

Andrea-um that sounds incredible! I want vintage mannequin heads everywhere!!

  4. I collect cookbooks, but not just any old cookbooks. I particularly like old ones from the 1950's and '60's. I think they are so crazy with their recipes for brains and beef tongue and their tips on being a good housewife. In fact, I started a blog about cooking from one of the cookbooks http://www.abundantwifery.wordpress.com.

I also collect beach glass. It's pieces of glass that I find on the beach that has been tossed to and from fro in the water, creating a frosty look.

  5. I've been trying to figure out how to post a picture. (it occurred to me that I actually have my own blog, one that I haven't looked at in years but that is linked to my name here. I'm a little slow on the uptake! 🙂 Maybe I'll rework that blog into something current and usable and put pictures up there. I'm beginning to think that may have been what you meant in the first place!)

  6. What I love are your wooden tables!
Especially the one under the pic of the 2 ships, GORGEOUS! –Connie

  7. Our dining table is made from an old church door.
We call it our "table of humility" because each one of us has done something stupid to it over the years. At first my heart sunk as this beautiful table accumulated warps and cuts and scratches, but being that they're made from "life happening" it actually makes the table more precious and valuable!

  8. I started collecting those small souvenier spoons about 20 years ago. We had gone to Seattle for my sisters wedding. My husband spent time shopping for souvenier thimbles from everywhere we went for a guy at work whose wife collected them. I got jealous and made him buy me a spoon that said Seattle on it. I now have a rather large collection from the places we have visited and also my kids would bring them back from their travels. So for a few bucks each I can look at my collection from all over the world and remember how blessed we have been in our lives.

  9. Halie, I love the letters for the future for your kids! That is awesome!!! I wish I would have done that! When my girls were little, I used to collect memories and stories of my kids in journals for each child. When my girls turn 18, we have a blessing for them where important women in my girl's lives come together and write Bible verses and words of wisdom/advice for my girls as they embark on their adult lives. It is not written in a time capsule, but it is kind of the same idea. How fun for you to get to read all those time capsule letters written to your kids in the years to come!

  10. Love the monkey in the diving helmet! Old globes are very cool and typewriters are very sculptural really. I'll take a gnome over a clown any day of the week! Trunk time
capsules are a great idea, too late for me, I wasn't organized enough when my son was a baby.

I collect sea glass, vintage jewelry and other random items that catch my eye. I love learning the history of things.
