Dear Raimy,

While on the beautiful beach in St Barts, I turned around to find you sharing a towel with a topless beauty.  Upon reaching her perch, I heard you both in conversation.  I had no clue what you were talking about though, because you two were speaking French.  (By the time you read this, I will undoubtedly regret I had you learn a language that I do not know).  The woman was laughing and trying to tell me something, but mama’s an idiot, I couldn’t understand a word she said.  She couldn’t speak a word of English.  She was laughing so hard and thought by speaking slowly I might then understand.  ‘Nope still a moron, hot topless lady’.  I finally was able to pull you away from this woman and we went inside.  “What were you two talking about?” I say nonchalantly, trying not to make you uncomfortable.  You simply say “nothing” and we leave it at that.

The next morning you and Saylor bolt out of bed and straight into your swimsuits.  We sit down for breakfast on the back porch and daddy and I are enjoying the sound of the waves crashing.  Aaaaaaaahhhhh peaceful.  As I sip my hot coffee you look to Saylor and say “Saylor you should only wear your bikini bottoms…that’s what the French do”  “Why Raimy???!!!!” Saylor squeals!  “Because it’s natural and free”.  Jonny and I lock eyes realizing that the topless woman must have told you that…  We do our best not to laugh.  This is a great conversation… “Hey Raim, what do you think of everyone not wearing tops here?” I ask you.  “When you are wearing a tied up swimsuit your boobies are tied down and they hurt.  You shouldn’t wear your top either mommy.  I think it is so beautiful not to.”  “It is beautiful Raimy, I agree”  hahahaha.

Love that we sat over a beautiful breakfast, overlooking the ocean, having a civilized conversation about breasts.

You crack me up beyond belief with your views on the world.  You make the most mundane things in  life sparkle with a new luster.  I pray that we always have such open communication.  You and the girls are my world and I adore you guys with everything in me.

Love,
Mama

  3. Hi Haylie,

I keep thinking of your adorable little story, and every time I do it reminds me of the day my 6 year old son (now 16) came home from 1st grade wanting to tell me his 'secret'.

    "Of course", I told him.

    "I have sex," he says.

"………..how about that honey, what do you mean?"

    "I'm in love."

"That's so great, baby. If you want to tell somebody else your secret, maybe tell them you have a crush…"
(the first of the series of sex talks follows) and then:

"Okay, mom. And guess what. She crushed me back!"

Thank you so much for reminding me of that memory of my son! It is fun to laugh about it WITH him now.
Keep writing those letters to your kids, it's so unique and lovely.
And thank you also for sharing with us all!

    Connie
